Kāvyaprakāśa Part 2 (From Ullāsa 7)
Kāvyaprakāśa of Ācārya Mammaṭa is one of the principal texts of Sāhityaśāstra. In ten Ullāsas, it covers the entire landscape of Poetics. Kāvyaprakāśa is one of the works on which dozens of commentaries have been written. In fact, it is legendary that scholars bemoan “Commentaries on Kāvyaprakāśa have been written in every house, and yet, the text remains as inscrutable as ever!”
Kāvyaprakāśa is prescribed for study in all advanced courses of Sāhityaśāstra. As is evident from the above quote, it is not an easy text to understand, except under the guidance of an able guru. In these video Lectures, Ms. Visalakshi Sankaran leads the student through the text in English, bringing out the nuances of śāstra drawing upon the long experience of teaching various kāvyas.
